April is National Poetry Month

When I plan for Digital Playground sessions, it is helpful to reach out to the iTeachers at my schools to find out what the teachers might be interested in learning and to get some information about the content they will be teaching in the days or weeks ahead. Making the stations relevant and timed to fit instructional goals has been very beneficial for the teachers at my schools. During these sessions, I often hear them comment, "I can use this with my kids this week!" For this month, the iTeachers requested ideas to use with students as they celebrate National Poetry Month.

I planned to use the stations shared above with the entire faculty during an after school session, but our meeting was cancelled due to severe weather. Instead, I set up shop in the Reading Coach's office for teachers to visit during their planning period. As always, my goal was to create a fun and engaging atmosphere for the teachers to experience a student perspective!

January 2017 Updates

Welcome back! I hope that everyone found some time for fun and for relaxation over the break.

The beginning of a new year is the perfect time to pause, reflect, and focus on our goals for the weeks and months ahead. In addition to losing the extra pounds gained over the break, my goals for 2017 include eating out less often, maintaining and radiating a positive outlook, and appreciating the beauty and happiness found in everyday things.

Please take just a moment to explore the information and resources collected on the Thinglink below. Don't hesitate to contact me or to reserve an appointment slot on my Book Me Calendar if I can help you in any way in the days and weeks ahead!

Infopics

An infopic combines an image and words in order to convey a message. This is a great option for quotes, definitions, or tidbits of information. Check out this post by Tony Vincent for more information.

The infopic on the right was created using WordSwag, which I picked up using Apps Gone Free over the break. Free options that students can use to create infopics include Typorama, Adobe Spark Post, and Canva.

Welcome Back, Teachers! 2016

Summer has flown by, but I hope everyone enjoyed a refreshing and relaxing break! It's hard to believe that tomorrow morning will by my 13th Opening Meeting at Powdersville Middle. #timeflies

Throughout this week, I'll be doing my best to get to each of my schools in order to meet new teachers, help those who need it, and share updates for the coming year. To help organize the many resources that I would like to share with everyone, I created a Thinglink. In addition to being more visually appealing than a long list of links, this tool helps teachers to share several resources with one link. It is also a great way for students to bring together several links, images, videos, and text information all in one final product.

The background image for this Thinglink was created using Canva, which is one of my favorite tools for simple graphic design on the iPad. I hope everyone will find these resources helpful as we prepare for these first few weeks of school!

If you haven't already, I'd like to encourage everyone to join the Google Tips Remind Group, which sends a new Google Tip every Wednesday at 2 PM. Another great place to find useful tips and ideas for the classroom is on Twitter. Please use #asd1 to share ideas, photos, and videos from your classroom!

As we have done in the past, our team has created a Techie Door Sign Template for teachers. Please click HERE to create and personalize your own copy. This is a great way to help parents, students, and visitors to know how to connect with your classroom! I'll be bringing new Tech Badges to everyone who hangs a Techie Door Sign on or beside the classroom door.

Professional Development for 2016
This school year, I will be changing my monthly professional development at each school. Instead of introducing new tools each month, I will be joining teachers during regular planning times as a resource for planning new lessons and integrating technology into your specific grade and/or content. This will look slightly different at each of my five schools based on the unique goals shared with me by the administration, but the goal is to integrate technology into the lessons and assessments that teachers are planning and to infuse regularly scheduled professional development with appropriate technology tools. Please click on the correct link below for more specific dates/times:

Apple Updates for 2016-17
  • Apple did an education update over the summer that no longer requires students to create an iTunes account in order to download apps.
  • Students will download all apps from the School App Catalog, and they should not be required to enter a password. Our testing over the summer was successful!
  • We did have to recreate each School App Catalog this summer. Please check the catalog to make sure the apps that you would like to use with your students are there. If not, please send Preisig or the iPad expert an email.
  • Each school will be receiving an iPad Distribution Presentation this week with instructions for students. (These instructions should be fewer than in the past, but it is very important that students follow the directions given!)

On the Road Again...

Based on survey results from my last session, our December Transform Session focused on presentation tools for teachers and students. In selecting the apps/tools to share this month, I again tried to balance already familiar apps with the "new" in order to meet the needs of two different teacher groups: those who want to dig deeper into tools they already know and those who are always on the lookout for new tools!

Quizalize was a popular webtool shared last month, so I decided to use this quick assessment (Code: mbh692) to kick off our December Session. This warm-up gave me great feedback on teacher knowledge of the assessment tools from last time and served as a pretest covering a few of the tools for this session. Additionally, I was able to show my teachers how to access the quality item analysis features within Quizalize.

Next, teachers selected an article on student choice to quickly review and discuss with the group. Many groups commented that we are too often telling students what they must learn, how to learn it, and how to show what they've learned. Technology allows us to offer so many opportunities for student ownership and choice in their learning!

Using the information presented in their selected article, teachers were given an opportunity to explore Keynote, Prezi, FlowVella, Haiku Deck, Google Slide, Nearpod, ClassFlow, Pear Deck, Canva, and/or Buncee with the goal of choosing one to create a quick sample presentation. These presentations were shared with me via Google Classroom.

Haiku Deck was very popular among all groups K-12, and those in the early grades were very excited about Buncee. Teachers continue to enjoy having choice during the sessions, and feedback was encouraging. One teacher commented, "I really liked learning about these tools, and we had great discussion today. I actually wish the session could have been longer. This would be a great way to spend a technology in-service day because we could work together and go over multiple tools and actually create content for classes." Another teacher wrote, "Loved getting to create my own presentation. This enabled me to actually learn how to use the app, and I now have ideas for incorporating this next week!"

December Updates

Our Transform Session for December is based on the results from the survey last month and focuses on presentation tools for students and teachers. Teachers will be given an opportunity to explore Keynote, Prezi, FlowVella, Haiku Deck, Google Slides, Nearpod, ClassFlow, Pear Deck, Canva and/or Buncee with the goal of choosing one to create a quick sample. Please see below for upcoming PD dates and other great resources!

Don't forget about our 2nd Annual Tech the Halls Contest this month. You'll earn an adorable tech badge just for participating, and last year's winners took home some great prizes! Let those creative juices start flowing and get inspired by watching the video linked above.

Welcome Back, Teachers!

I'm so excited to begin welcoming teachers back to school tomorrow morning! It is hard to believe that this will be my 12th Opening Meeting at Powdersville Middle School.

To help with organizing the many resources that I would like to share, I created a Thinglink. In addition to being more visually appealing than a long list of links, teachers can also bookmark this one web link instead of creating multiple bookmarks for all of the resources.

The background image was created using Canva, which is one of my favorite tools for simple graphic design. I hope everyone will find these resources helpful as they prepare for those first few weeks of school!
